Abstract
Chrysanthemum varieties are commonly grown and consumed in Vietnam, especially on some special occasions. In the Mekong Delta, some Pico chrysanthemum varieties are popular because of their colorful petals and long-lasting durability, suitable for indoor decoration and miniature landscapes. Many studies have shown the role of the plant growth regulator cytokinin in increasing the number of flowers and prolonging the blooming time of some ornamental flower varieties, but there have been no specific studies on Pico chrysanthemums. The study was conducted to determine the appropriate dosage of benzyladenine (BA) supplement for the growth and flower quality of purple-pink Pico (Chrysanthemum sp.). The experiment was arranged in completely randomized design with five factors including 0.5 ppm, 10 ppm, 15 ppm and 20 ppm BA supplementation levels, in 10 replications with one plant per pot for each replication. The chemical solutions were applied three times at an interval of 10 days from 25 days after planting (DAP). The plants underwent three rounds of pinching at 5, 20 and 35 DAP. The results showed that the growth regulator BA had an impact on the growth and development of purple-pink Pico. The addition of 15 ppm and 20 ppm BA helped improve growth, increased plant weight, chlorophyll, diameter and number of flower buds. Regarding flower quality, the treatments supplemented with 15 ppm and 20 ppm BA resulted in the highest number of flowers at 159.8 flowers and 146.4 flowers, respectively; flower longevity lasted 29.9 days and 30.4 days, respectively. In summary, supplementing BA at dosages of 15 ppm and 20 ppm yielded good results on growth and prolonged the lifespan of small-leaved purple-pink Pico chrysanthemum.
