Practical Veterinary Clinic
History of the Can Tho University Practical Veterinary Clinic (CTU-PVC)
The Practical Veterinary Clinic is located at Gate C, Campus II, Can Tho University, 3/2 Street, Xuan Khanh Ward, Ninh Kieu District, Can Tho City. The PVC was established with special attention from various levels of the University and the dedication of Professor Chau Ba Loc (former Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chairman of the HEIFER Vietnam Program) along with the collective efforts of professors, lecturers, and staff of the Department of Veterinary Medicine. The construction of the PVC began in 2001, and it started its operation in 2002 with an initial funding of 270,000,000 VND sponsored by the HEIFER program and technical and financial support from American veterinarian Dr. Charles Peck. The establishment of the PVC was necessary for the University to open the Veterinary Medicine major at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The first manager of the PVC was Dr. Nguyen Van Bien, who coordinated the activities of the clinic, establishing a strong foundation and passing on his passion for the field to future generations. In 2015, Dr. Ho Thi Viet Thu succeeded Dr. Bien in managing and developing the clinic. Currently, under the leadership of Dr. Tran Ngoc Bich (Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine), and with the support of Can Tho University, the College of Agriculture, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, various organizations, and companies, the PVC has equipped itself with many modern facilities such as digital X-ray machines, ultrasound machines, endoscopy machines, PCR machines, and a state-of-the-art blood and urine testing system. This has significantly assisted veterinarians in their clinical diagnosis and treatment.
Regarding personnel, PVC has a team of highly specialized and dedicated veterinarians, most of whom have received extensive training both in Vietnam and abroad.
Functions of the CTU-PVC
The Practical Veterinary Clinic serves the purposes of teaching and scientific research for lecturers, graduate students specializing in Veterinary pathology and therapeutics for domestic animals, postgraduate students majoring in Veterinary Medicine, and undergraduate students majoring in Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Pharmacy, and Animal Husbandry. Alongside its teaching and research activities, the PVC also provides medical treatment for livestock, poultry, and wild animals, with a special focus on companion animals such as dogs, cats, and exotic pets. Additionally, the department regularly conducts short-term training courses specialized in small animal veterinary medicine.
